A Call for Awareness, Equality, Healing and Hope
As we move into June, a time when spring gives way to summer, we are deeply wounded as a nation and as a global community. During this time of year, we would normally enjoy a sense of renewal and anticipation of carefree summer activities. And yet, after weeks of sheltering-in-place to fight a major health crisis, we are again reminded of an even more insidious enemy; systemic and pervasive racism.
The horrific and senseless killing of George Floyd cannot and must not be glossed over, as countless beatings and killings that preceded it have been. We simply can no longer accept it in our minds, hearts and souls. It must be recognized as the event that forces us to reexamine ourselves, our beliefs, our institutions, and compels us to make significant and lasting change.
Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arrandondo stated, “being silent or not intervening, to me, you’re complicit.” Almost 30 years ago, Rodney King’s beating sparked similar protests, and while we certainly made some progress, it is pathetically little. Our relentless goal should be to create a nation where all people are free to live on equal terms and most certainly without fear of persecution based on race, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or ability.
As we begin moving towards “a new normal”, let’s each do our part to make sure normalcy is a better version of what we leave behind. Reject the chaos in the streets and instead educate yourselves, and others around you, about the realities of systemic racism. Reject complacency and choose to be an active participant in creating change that affords everyone equality, respect and security. Reject inactivity and actively invest your time and energy to create healing, hope and a better future for all.
We are your partner in the passionate pursuit of positive change and commitment to supporting your important initiatives.
Please stay safe, healthy and aware.
